Overview

Each year there are thousands of accidents that happen in the workplace because of poor health and safety practice. Ensuring your employees are competently trained in health and safety procedures is critical for employers. Having the correct systems in place can help guarantee a healthy and safe working environment for employees and any other people or visitors on your site.

The following qualifications have been designed to help businesses train their staff in preventative approaches to hazards while promoting a positive culture within the workplace. They have also been created to ensure that all employees are aware of their own responsibilities and how they contribute to the effective maintenance of health and safety policies, therefore, anyone achieving an award in this area will develop the appropriate knowledge and attitude to contribute to an organisation’s safe operations.

The qualifications

Level 1 Award in the Principles of Health and Safety within the Workplace

Course outline

The Level 1 Award in the Principles of Health and Safety within the Workplace is designed for those learners either currently working or those returning or starting work and wishing to gain a nationally recognised qualification in health and safety. The objective of the qualification is to  prepare learners to progress into further/higher level training.

This Level 1 award will give learners a basic understanding of health and safety within any workplace. It can also be used within an organisation’s induction programme as it allows additional specific content to be added on.

This qualification provides learners with an understanding of the main responsibilities of employees and employers with regards to health and safety. It also provides an understanding of how the workplace can affect health and safety.

The total qualification time for this qualification is 4 hours

Course assessment

The qualification is assessed through a multiple-choice question examination. This method of assessment is an end-of-course exam and must follow the awarding bodys’ Invigilation Procedures. The examination for this qualification contains 15 questions that must be completed within 30 minutes.

Successful learners will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding across the qualification syllabus and achieve a minimum pass mark of 60%.

Level 2 Award in Health and Safety within the Workplace

Course outline

The Level 2 Award in Health and Safety within the Workplace is designed to provide learners with knowledge of the basic health and safety practices essential in the workplace. The objective of the qualification is to: • prepare learners to progress into further/higher-level training and a supporting role in the workplace.

The qualification provides learners with an understanding of:

  • the responsibilities of employers and employees
  • the benefits of good health and safety
  • steps to a risk assessment and how they can reduce accidents
  • near misses and ill-health
  • typical hazards and controls in a workplace
  • common causes of accidents
  • near misses and ill-health
  • emergency procedures and the importance of recording accidents
  • near misses
  • ill-health.

The total qualification time for this qualification is 10 hours and of this, 6 hours is recommended as guided learning.  

Course assessment

The qualification is assessed through a multiple-choice question examination. This method of assessment is an end-of-course exam and must follow the awarding bodys’ Invigilation Procedures. The examination for this qualification contains 20 questions that must be completed within 45 minutes.

Successful learners will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding across the qualification syllabus and achieve a minimum pass mark of 60%.

Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace

Course outline

The Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace is aimed at learners already working in the capacity of supervisor, manager or team leader or those who are preparing to start work at this level. The objective of this qualification is to support a role in the workplace as it gives them an underpinning knowledge of health and safety.

The qualification provides learners with an understanding of:

  • the requirements of health, safety and welfare
  • legislation
  • the benefits of a health and safety management system
  • the risks and control methods for common workplace hazards
  • the principles of risk assessment
  • incident investigation

The total qualification time for this qualification is 30 hours and of this, 21 hours is recommended as guided learning.  

Course assessment

This qualification is assessed by a multiple-choice question examination. This method of assessment is an end-of-course exam and must follow the awarding bodys’ Invigilation Procedures. The examination for this qualification contains 60 questions that must be completed within 120 minutes.

Successful learners must achieve a score of at least 40 out of 60. Learners will achieve a Merit at 50 out of 60.
