At the Axiom Dynamics Training Centre we receive a number of requests asking for further information on the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET). This short introduction to the Level 5 DET  should give you more information on what is needed to achieve this teaching qualification.

What is it?

he Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement and prepares trainee teachers to teach in a range of contexts. To complete this qualification you should be in a teaching/training role, as it will assess, (by way of a portfolio of evidence), your competence when undertaking teaching and/or training responsibilities.

Who is this for?

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is for those who wish to become fully qualified as a further education teacher. The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) aims to give those established within the teaching profession a recognised qualification. It is also suitable for those who are practising within the sector, who have a significant amount of knowledge and understanding of the industry and who now wish to combine that experience with a formal qualification. The DET course is also suitable for trainers and tutors working in adult and community learning or work-based training within public, private, voluntary or community organisations.

What’s involved?

This course is assessed using a combination of written assignments and a practical portfolio of evidence from your current teaching role.
The theory-based assignments require you to analyse various theories of teaching and learning which link to your own teaching practice and also an evaluation of this practice.
The practical component requires you to compile an e-portfolio of your current teaching practice, including logging 100 hours of teaching, across a variety of contexts, levels and learners, and 8 lesson observations.

The units you will cover are as follows:

Mandatory Units (75 credits):

Unit 1. Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training

Unit 2. Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training

Unit 3. Theories, principles and models in education and training

Unit 4. Wider professional practice in education and training

Optional Units (45 credits)

What are the benefits of gaining the DET qualification?

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) programmes are the recognised teaching qualification for the post-16 sector. It is a popular route for prospective teachers who want to pursue a career in further education, or currently hold an FE teaching role and want to gain a full teaching qualification. It is also equivalent to the second year of a UK Bachelor’s degree.

The DET offers an excellent opportunity for substantial career development. FE Colleges and other similar employers usually require this level of qualification to gain employment.

Having achieved the diploma, you can gain the professional status of Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) through the Society for Education and Training. This is through a process called “professional formation”.
